We sat down with owner/founder Dave Collins, who shares with us some insights into the business of video and what makes ANGRYchair successful. But first, check out their video about why they love Wipster.
I’ve always been fascinated by video, the idea of entertaining with the moving image, and telling good stories that move people, influence them and change perceptions. I studied at university and did an internship which led to my first job. I worked in television for five years, starting out in pretty junior positions where I was camera assisting and swinging a fluffy mic, and working through to producer roles. My last job was as a series producer for a TV show on one of the main TV networks here (in Australia). I left that world to start ANGRYchair.
We strive to make business videos as interesting as possible. There’s a pretty strong perception that any kind of content about a business is boring, and so we strive to tell good stories, compelling stories about people, whatever they do, and really make them entertaining. People often want a video on their website about themselves, that explains them and builds trust in their audiences, or tips and tricks or sharable content that people would find useful and helpful.
A typical day is almost non-existent. One day I might be donning scrubs and going to shoot some surgery, or I could be going to the location of a reality show and shooting behind the scenes, or going to a school to shoot with students and teachers. There’s nothing really typical about our days; the only consistent thing is that you’ll always be doing something different and fun – that’s one of the things I love most about this job.
The biggest problem is that most clients don’t know how to explain exactly what they want changed. With Wipster they can point to it – it’s like they’re standing there in the edit suite, like you’ve got the client’s finger pointing to what they want done. You can work through it really succinctly. Having gone to this workflow, there’s much less second and third drafting. It’s a much cleaner and more efficient process.
We think Wipster is a brilliant tool for sharing and getting feedback on drafts of videos, and it’s simple to use. Our top features would be:
1) Commenting on exact parts of the video
Wipster allows viewers to comment on specific parts of the video so our editors can look at the feedback and know exactly what changes need to be made in which part of the video. If a viewer sees something they want to comment on, they click on it, type a comment and other viewers will be able to see exactly where in the video they made that comment. It makes the whole process really easy, functional, and eliminates the previous problems ANGRYchair had with confusion about what changes the clients wanted.
2) Working to an automatically generated checklist
Before Wipster, it was difficult for clients to give clear feedback which ANGRYchair editors could act upon. Now with Wipster, clients and viewers can make much more specific comments, which automatically go onto a checklist with timecodes. ANGRYchair editors can then work through the list to make the requested changes. This creates a seamless workflow, and the capacity for people to reply to a comment if a change can or cannot be made.
3) Uploading new versions and seeing evolution of the video
Each time ANGRYchair editors upload a new version of a video they are working on, previous versions remain available, so they can still go back and see the evolution and different iterations of the video. This means they can compare different versions, and if someone has made a change which didn’t work, they can always go back to a previous version which worked better.
4) To collaborate with and get feedback from colleagues and clients
Wipster allows collaborative input from both clients and editing teams. ANGRYchair editors can track the comment history on each video to see what feedback their boss has given, or what their client has said. They can then respond as needed. This facilitates great team dynamics, and is really helpful for the ANGRYchair team as filmmakers.
Thanks to Dave and the team at ANGRYchair for sharing their story. If you have any questions, comment, or your own tips to share, then add them in the comments below.
